PETER YATES is a long time member of the Shawnigan Lake School faculty who lives his values. As director of Shawnigan's EDGE Leadership Program he provides youth with transformational and unforgettable leadership experiences ranging from wilderness travel to global service learning projects (EDGE stands for Engagement, Development, Gratitude, and Experience ( http://www.sls.bc.ca/edge.htm ). During the Summer Leadership Institute Peter will again be creating opportunities for outdoor exploration and personal space in the splendid natural environment of the Cowichan Valley, including kayaking, swimming, walking and cycling. |
| DVORA LEVIN is an activist who has worked to make transformative change both here and abroad. As the poet-in-residence at the first Summer Leadership Institute, she helped to nurture the poetry in each participant's experience, delighting in their surprise at birthing their own unknown poet. Currently, as a founding member of ORG-AIDE, she and her team are assisting non-profits to achieve excellence. During her 13 years in Israel, Dvora worked in conflict resolution with both Palestinian and Israeli educators and security forces. As a volunteer, she has served as the Cemetery Director and Chair of the historic Victoria Synagogue and as a member of the Curriculum Committee of Leadership Victoria. Her published books of poetry (Sharav and To Bite The Blue Apple ) have been birthed through these experiences. |
JUDI TROST, B.A., R.M.T. will be integrating movement and awareness into our time together. We become more whole, by making connections, and making connections is quite literally - even on the cellular level - what learning is. We can improve the functioning of the entire system through the 'laboratory' of movement, through playful exploration in a supportive environment. Learning in this case means increasing awareness of functional connections in one's whole system... whole spine, the breath, the attention, the intention, the eyes, etc. in sitting, reaching, working...toward integration and healing. Judi has been a practicing massage therapist for 20 years, has been studying mindbodyfullness since 1984, is trained in the Practice of Loving Presence, Hakomi Method and is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner (2001). |

Our Commitment to Scholarship: Like A Song A song is a good example of human synergy, taking more than one musical part and putting them together to create a song that has a much more dramatic effect than each of the parts when played individually. This week is a leadership synergy opportunity for everyone. Each participant in the Summer Leadership Institute is engaging in a 'pay-it-forward' commitment, an investment in themselves and each other to serve and build organizations, communities and a world with leadership capacity for a changing future. Our commitment to scholarship is like 'a song', an investment in opening up accessibility that contributes to the ongoing richness and sustainability of the Summer Leadership Institute. . We presume that the full amount of registration is beyond the reach of some, and, in the spirit of human synergy, that you will contribute all that you can. The way a "scholarship" works is that you will be required to cover the basic operating costs of the Institute, a minimum of $600, and engage in a conversation about how much beyond that you can pay. We invite you to demonstrate your eligibility, and begin the conversation about your contribution.
Please be in contact with Starr McMichael for details and the application form, in which you will share who are you as a leader, and (1) how you have demonstrated leadership in the past, (2) how your leadership has contributed to your community/community-building, and (3) what your commitment is to the future - what you hope this Institute experience will make possible for you. We must receive applications no later than 30th March 2010.
